Grades & Assignments

Square

We follow the standard 100 point grading scale, using numbers and letters with a + or a  -. We take grading to be an ethical contract: we demonstrate what the expectations are for each level, and you are confident as to where you stand as the semester progresses.

Each of these assignments is designed to be undertaken by a team of 3-6 students.  Individual work is strongly discouraged due to the size and scope of the projects.

Writing Project 1  (25%)

This writing project asks you to analyze and evaluate the relationship between a chosen academic discipline and the Digital humanities by examining its use of methods, tools, goals, and values from DH. Requirements include analysis and description of DH in the Discipline including peer-reviewed articles and projects. Written outputs include a detailed slideshow presentation, a website, and a 1-page report. Due end of week 4, presented in class.

Writing Project 2  (25%)

This writing project presents a review of a successful and active project in DH. Requirements include analysis and description of project and assessment of the project as scholarship in DH. Written outputs include a detailed slideshow presentation, a website, and a 1-page report. Due end of week 9, presented in class.

Writing Project 3: Propose a Project (25%)

This writing project presents a proposal for a new (non-existing) project in DH. Requirements include identifying research question, scope, tools, data, and anticipated results.  Delivered as a written proposal and brief slideshow pitch presentation, with a webpage. Due at final exam.

Informal Writing: Weekly Research Writing Assignment (12.5%)

Each week, I’ll ask you to use research to locate, select, analyze, and share data about three separate things (a) an active project in the field of DH or that uses DH methods/tools/values,  (b) a digital tool useful to work in the Digital Humanities, and (c) a peer-reviewed publication related to work in the Digital Humanities or any discipline it collaborates with.  There are ~11 assigned; I’ll drop 2 and grade the rest for 12.5% of your final grade.

Midterm Exam (12.5%)

At the midterm, I’ll assign an exam that includes several short answer questions and a range of essay questions, for which you’ll select one. Graded as an in-class written exam to demonstrate proficiency on the material from Unit 1.
