Exam

Square

Your exam is a short written exam ( 1 essay question out of 3 choices) asking you to demonstrate proficiency in the values, methods, tools, and disciplines of DH. Undertaken in week 9, it comprises 10% of your grade in the course.

Resources

Each of the questions below asks you to compose an essay. For your essay, you should use the material we all share this term:

  • our videos on What is Digital Humanities, from week one & two
  • our slides on an Introduction to the goals of digital humanities, from week 5
  • our slides on the values of Digital Humanities, from week 8

Additionally, you should feel free to use any of the material you or your team generated for projects 1-3.

Goal of Exam

Your goal is to write an essay that conveys your growing familiarity and proficiency in thinking about, analyzing, and using the methods, goals, values, tools, and disciplines of the digital humanities. Your essay will use evidence in the form of hyperlinks: when citing a thing, refer readers to that thing by naming it and embedding a link like this: One of the leading candidates for data analysis and visualization is Tableau.

Each of the essay questions asks you to combine two separate arrays from our term in demonstrating your proficiency in the material of the course. The material you use is completely up to you. You may select from your own work, the work of your peers, or select new material to use. Whatever you select, your goal is to convey your proficiency with the concepts and technologies discussed.

Your essay must work as an essay:

  • an introduction, with a clear thesis/main point
  • a body, with ideas that are supported with evidence and explained using exposition. you must have at least two points.
  • a conclusion, that sums up your points and returns the reader to the position of your proficiency in the material.

Your essay should be somewhere between 650 and 1000 words.

Topics of Exam

Your essay must directly address one of the following prompts.

1. Disciplines and values of DH. Write an essay aligning one of the disciplines in DH with two of the values used in DH. Give specific examples how the values expressed and practiced by DH researchers can contribute to productive work in the chosen discipline. What value from DH does the discipline you’ve selected most closely align with or benefit from?

2. Tool, goal, value of DH. Write an essay aligning a tool you’ve selected with a specific goal and specific value of DH.  Specificity is key! What value and goal is best represented by the tool you’ve selected to overview?
